Mansion Block
London
As part of a wider remodelling within a centrally located, Victorian mansion block flat in London, Studio Brassica have transformed a dark, cellular kitchen on a tight budget. Studio Brassica aimed to create a more social and efficient space without losing its sense of enclosure. The client's love for plants, along with a desire for a low-budget and low-carbon impact, guided the design.
A key move was removing the plasterboard to the existing wall whilst retaining and exposing the wooden studwork, which was sanded down and painted white. This not only provided a rustic, textured surface perfect for hanging plants and art but also embraced the natural imperfections and asymmetry of the original structure. A new opening to the south-west wall makes the most of the views from the top-floor flat and golden sunsets.
To maximise every inch of the small flat, awkward spaces were all carefully accounted for, including incorporating a salvaged wine rack slotted into a previously boxed in gap to the chimney breast. The space was brought to life using a natural palette of colours and materials, including clay paints and oak, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.
